2018 Grand Parade Theme: Apples, Arts and Agriculture

The Apple Festival Committee would like to encourage all businesses, churches, civic and youth organizations to participate in the celebration by entering a float in the parade this year. Prizes awarded in each division are:

2018 Apple Festival Parade Grand Marshall - Charlie Doane

The 2018 Parade Grand Marshall is someone known by many -- Charlie Doane, lifelong resident of Chilhowie, a 1974 graduate of Chilhowie High School and an active member of Chilhowie Christian Church. Now representing Chilhowie as a second term councilman, Charlie is honored to work with fellow citizens at keeping this community a great place to call home. That same desire carries over into our schools, where Charlie has served as a member of the Smyth County School Board for eight years. He also lends his time and enthusiasm to Chilhowie Little League where he’s been a coach for both baseball and softball. Many Chilhowie High students also benefitted from Charlie’s guidance when he helped lead as an assistant coach for the school’s baseball and softball teams. As the previous owner of Chilhowie Insurance Agency, Charlie was happy to give 25 years to helping friends and neighbors meet their coverage needs. He’s now part-owner of Chilhowie Drug Company, a family owned business established in 2013. Charlie is married to wife Tamara, a retired school teacher in Smyth County. They recently celebrated 37 years of marriage and have three children and three grandchildren. Spending time with the grandchildren is one of Charlie’s favorite things to do, along with attending sporting events and cheering on his teams.
